Chapter Fourteen

Her mother and Peter were out in the yard, and both turned to stare as the truck pulled up. Her mother threw a last handful of scratch to her chickens and then walked forward to meet them. Peter had been sitting on the front steps clutching his bear and looking totally woe-be-gone, but his face lit and he began to wave wildly when he saw Marly. She drew a sharp breath and felt again that familiar stab of rage at her mother. Why couldn’t she at least give the child a little attention? Marly glanced side-long at Luke. Let this make Peter’s life at least a little better, she thought. At least that. Peter started to run toward the truck shouting, “It’s Auntie Marly. It’s my Marly.” Marly stepped out of the cab and caught the child as he launched himself at her. “You came back early, Marly. My bears don’t all have hats. You came back early.”

“I brought someone to meet you, Peter.” She turned; Luke stood beside the truck watching them. “This is your uncle Luke.”

Luke took two steps forward, crouched down, and held out a hand. “Hi Peter.”

The boy circled Marly’s legs with his arms and hid his face against her. “I don’ wan’ an uncle,” he said quite clearly.

“Oh, Peter,” Marly groaned.

Luke smiled up at her and then stood. “Give the kid time,” he said. She bit hard on her lower lip and nodded.

Then her mother came up. “So this is his father’s people?”

“Mom,” Marly whispered.

“You owe us, Mister. You owe us for four years of child care.”

“Mother! Please!” Marly gasped.

Luke fetched a checkbook from his pocket. “Name a figure,” he said with no inflection what-so-ever in his voice. His face was as smooth and hard as the rocks that lined the front path.

“Oh, Luke, please don’t,” Marly whispered. He looked at her, shrugged, and put the checkbook away. “He owes us, Marly. You got noodles for a backbone, just like your dad did.”

Marly closed her eyes and shuddered.

“We want to take...the boy...” Marly realized Luke was still having a hard time with the name. “to meet my mother, Mrs Prescott. It’ll give you a rest.”

“You better plan on her doing the rest of your baby-sitting, Marly. I’ve done my share.”

This is a disaster, Marly thought. But I won’t cry. I will not. And the tears began to roll down her cheeks. Luke swore softly and then came up and tried to take Peter who clung even harder. “Gather some things, will you, Marly. It’s a considerable distance. We’ll have to stay overnight.” Marly nodded. “You wanna go for a ride in my car, Peter?”

“No.”

“We...have horses.”

Peter’s head came off Marly’s hip. “Do you have a puppy?”

“We could get one.”

“Really?”

“Really.”

Peter stared suspiciously at this newcomer in his life. “Will Auntie Marly go too?”

“Oh yes. Auntie Marly will go too.” There was something in Luke’s voice that drew Marly’s eyes. He smiled slightly. “He just wants to get in your pants,” Marly’s mother hissed, and Marly gasped.

“Mother!”

“Just remember they don’t buy the cow if they get the milk free.
